1. 원서 에세이는 입시에 도움이 되기도 하지만 많은 불이익을 줄 수 있다.
20년 이상 많은 학생들의 미국 대학 입시를 도우면서 학생 개개인이 갖고 있는 내신 / 시험점수(SAT등) / 활동(비교과)등 보다 더 높은 순위의 대학에 진학하는 것을 많이 본적이 없다.
하지만 많은 학생들이 합격이 당연시되는 대학에 불합격하는 것을 자주 볼 수 있었다.
나의 직감은 원서에세이가 불합격의 요인이라는 점이다.
자신의 단점이나 약점을 주제로한 에세이를 작성하고 그때보단 좋아졌다고 이야기하지만, 무엇보다 자신의 잘못을 지나치게 강조한다.
최고의 방어는 훌륭한 공격이다.
자신의 장점을 먼저, 우선 강조하라! 이런 중요함을 학생들은 항상 잊어버린다.

2. 원서 에세이는 작은 사립 대학에 가장 도움이 되고 대형 주립 대학에는 가장 적게 도움이 된다.
작은 사립대학에서는 입학사정관에게 훨씬 더 많은 재량권이 주어지며, 가장 주관적으로 학생을 평가하는 부분은 에세이고 그 다음은 추천서가 될 것이다.

3. 사립대학 지원 에세이에는 내 인생의 (감동적인)단편 스타일,
대형 주립대학 지원 에세이에는 나의 강점에 대한 강조하자.
물론 둘 다 모든 대학에 좋으며 이 간단한 포인트에는 많은 "변수 부분"이 있으며 많은 추가 주의 사항이 있다.
그러나 주립 대학은 지원자가 강조하고 나타내고 싶은 과외활동을 더 돋보이게 할 수 있는 기회이다. 
특히 그 활동이 유의미하고 일상적인 활동이나 일상적인 봉사활동이 아닌 경우에는 더욱 더 도움이 된다.

4. 소규모 사립 대학의 경우 모든 선택 에세이와 추가 에세이를 작성하라.
다시 말하지만, 소규모 사립 대학은 학생들이 대학 분위기와 문화에 "핏"이 받아들이는 데 훨씬 더 주관적이다.
학교에 대한 애착과 열정을 보여주는 것이 대학의 팬이라는 표시다 : 과도한 참여(그 대학SNS 계정에 팔로우하고, 술 취한 파티 사진이나 불리한 글, 사진 등 정리)는 지양하고, 자신의 대학의 관한 열정을 보여주고 "추가 선택적 에세이"를 작성하자.

5. 지원했던 대학을 위해 작성한 에세이를 다른 대학 지원 에세이로 재활용하는 것은 괜찮다.
그것은 학생자신의 에세이고 학생한테 저작권이 있기 때문이다. 학생은 누군가를 표절하지 않는다.
그러나 대학도 재활용한다는 것을 알고 있으며 일부대학(특히 소규모 사립 대학)에는 다른 대학 지원에 사용한 에세이를 재활용할 수 없게 추가 에세이가 있는 이유이다.
대학들은 학교에 대한 열정을 원하고 확인하고 싶어한다.

Top 5 Issues with College Application Essays:

1. Application essays sometimes help but they can hurt a LOT. In my 20+ years of helping students apply to universities, I've not seen many students get into a higher rank university than their grade/test score/activity profile indicates, but I've seen many students get denied to universities they should have gotten into. My hunch was, often times, that it was the fault of their application essay. They talk about their weakness(es), apologize for them, say they've gotten better, and end up over-emphasizing their fault first and foremost. The best defense is a great offense. Emphasize your strengths first! Surprising how often this is forgotten.

2. Application essays help the most with small private colleges, the least with big public universities. Admissions officers are given a lot more discretion in accepting students at the small private colleges, and the number one subjective element is the college application essay (next is the recommendation letter).

3. (A moving) short story of my life for private colleges, a reporting of my strengths for large public universities. Of course, both are good for all colleges, and there're a LOT of "moving parts" in this one little statement, a lot of additional caveats and concerns. However, public universities can understand better the activities applicants emphasize and expand on from their extracurricular activity list, especially if the activity is significant and not the usual activity or usual involvement.

4. Do all the optional essays and additional contributions, for the small private colleges. And, of course do them well. Again, small private colleges have a lot more subjective leeway in accepting students to "fit" their college mood and culture. What better indication that you're a fan of the college than doing all the fandom stuff: over-and-above participation (probably good to get on their social media accounts and clean up your drunken party pictures first though), showing enthusiasm by really knowing your facts (about the university) in answering your essay question, and doing the "extras" like the optional essays.

5. Recycling your essays from one application to another is ok. It's your essay, so you essentially have the "copyright" on your essay. You're not plagiarizing anyone. However, universities know this too, and the reason some universities (especially the small private colleges) have the additional essays that are really weird or unrecyclable to use in other university applications. They want you to work to show your "fandom love."

"Right before a test, I tell students to “Do your average!” and not their “best.” My experience with students in test prep is that they are often concerned about the “show,” the test day, and not the day-to-day learning that they do at home or at school. The ones most disappointed with their performance on test day are the ones who did less than they thought they are capable of. Doing their “average” then is quite good and most all students are quite good in our assessment, theirs and mine, in the course of our lessons together.

The improvements we have gained in the classroom are victories and a cause for happy self-reflection. All students have them, and I am always surprised that they all do. The ones that need help, at times, I have talked with outside of class, driven them home imploring them to try harder, and not do the self-destructive things that hurt them as a person first and as a student second.

All young people improve with such care and mentoring from teachers. This is what we try to instill in our students at Steven Academy. Test prep, after all, is shooting for numbers or letters, but it’s the effort and the motivation to improve one’s self that best result in a satisfying academic achievement. Contented students do their best anyway because they know what that feeling is, so asking them to do their “average” is asking them to show what they are made of in such day-to-day quiet moments of reflection and care in what they do. Finding that in students is the key for us as educators, I believe. It is that “average” we seek in our students when we teach, and what we get out, the student’s personal “average” on a day to shine."
